sketches

These are some sketches and notes.

Day Five

Today I started to move 'Chaz' into the different positions. After keying the first keyframe I moved onto the next and then tweaked the middle to make the translation smooth. It was quite difficult to get the movement looking smooth and it took a long time to get it looking natural. I carried on with the rest of the keyframes and completed the task. I was then allowed to experiemnt as I pleased for the rest of the day. I played around with speed of movement making 'Chaz' dance!

I really enjoyed my week with 'A Large Evil Corporation' and found it was helpful in my decision to apply for University.

Day Four

This morning I spent observing the work of a staff member in my room. She was creating a scene where there were wrestlers made from blue tack. It looked very complicated but was a more sophisticated version of what I was doing. I also looked at projects they have completed like the 'jus-roll' pastry advert in which a lot of work went in to creating the character.

This afternoon I filmed myself standing up from a seated position. I studied this from different angles and sketched four keyframes to create.

Day three

Today I filmed myself jumping from different angles so I could analyse and imitate the movement on 'chaz'. I played the video many times to observe it then did some quick sketches to work out a number of keyframes I needed and the different body positions. I first sketched from the front using 6 keyframes and noting anything I thought could be important then I sketched from the side again making notes.
I then moved chaz's different body parts to mimic the position I had sketched then adjusted the speed so he fell faster than he jumped. This took me all day because I wanted to get everything perfect and I was extremely happy with the result.

Day Two

Task one- Bounce to the right
Today I was carrying on with boouncing a ball but this time I was bouncing it to the right. To do this I changed the grid layout to make it longer. I used the directional arrow to start at the first keyframe and moved the ball with every other key frame. This was fairly easy now I had got the hang of using the program.

I then did a ping pong ball test. I filmed a ping pong ball bouncing across a table to study the movement. This was because so far I had moved the ball but not added any rotation. This was my next task, to add rotation to the ball translation movement.

Task Two- Add rotation
I needed to create the translation and keyframes then adjust the speed of the translation. I then added rotation to the translation keeping the speed of the rotation coinciding with the speed of the translation.

Task two- Roll a cannon ball off a table and onto the floor
I found this more difficult. I created a platform of a floor and a table and started with the translation keeping the keyframes to a minimum, then I added the rotation. I needed to use different viewpoints for this to get different perspectives. This was more difficult because I could not get the rotation to coincide with the translation, it took me a while but I got there eventually.

I finished the day by looking at an animated model which was created to experiment with movement. 'Chaz' had seperate moveable body parts and you could control him by rotating or moving selected parts of his body

Day one

Today I was shown around the office; there were many different rooms three of which were to work in. There were about five members of staff two of which were in my room. I was given my own computer to work on and given my brief. I had to create a ball and make it move realistically. I opened the programme XSI (softimage) and experimented with keyboard shortcuts.
S= Move
S-Left= Move
S-Right= Rotate
S-Middle= Zoom
V= direction to move
K= Keyframe

Exercise one- animate a ball rolling to a stop.
Before this task I was given a ball to roll. I experiemnted with roling the ball to observe the speed and how far it rolled. It was important to observe first to get a good idea of reality before creating it. I created a shape to act as a floor and a shere then placed it into the starting position. I then inserted a new key frame for the starting position and a new one around three seconds later for the end position. I then moved the ball to a new location and keyed it to the end frame. This meant the ball moved from the first to the last position in three seconds but in one solid movement. I went to the animation editor window and adjusted the pos y on the f curve to adjust the speed. A steeper slope meant a faster speed so I adjusted it to make the ball roll to a stop.

At 11.00 there was a team meeting. Here the staff discussed the jobs allocated and progress. It was an opportunity to show the work and get feedback and advice. I got to see some of the work they did and see how the company worked as a whole. There was a lot of planning and communication involved.

Exercise two- Bounce a ball.
For this I used three key frames and just used a loop to create the bouncing effect. To make it bounce effectively I adjusted the pos y to make it move faster at the bottom of the bounce and slower at the peak like a real ball would bounce.
I was also given the book 'The animators survival kit' by Richard Williams to look at. This was quite helpful and interesting to read.
